Johannesburg -

She survived a brutal rape, stabbing and a beating at her place of work, Helen Joseph Hospital. And she thinks her attacker is somebody linked to the hospital.

But Bongiwe Mnguni, a selfless mother of one and nurse, says even though it took a near-death attack, she is happy with the pledge that hospitals will be made safe.

“I spoke to the media and expressed my disappointment, hurt and disbelief about what happened because I wanted the public to know so as to put pressure on the Department of Health because nobody should ever go through what I did.”

On Friday the deputy minister of health, Dr Joe Phahla, visited the hospital following an investigation into the brutal attack last month.

Phahla suggested that the nurse’s assumption that her attacker was someone from the hospital had substance because of where it took place. “We were given a tour and shown where this incident happened.

“It is worrying that it happened in an environment that suggests that the perpetrator had keys to enter the area.”

On Friday, Phahla visited the family home of the nurse.

He said she was in a high spirits when they arrived and that she was a strong woman.

“She is happy with the speedy attendance she received and the regular contact she received.”

He added that their commitment was to ensure that an attack of this nature never happened again

“We have identified key risk areas and … we are working on improving the quality of security,” Phahla said.
