Johannesburg - A Springs couple who allegedly assaulted and kept their five children captive in their home appeared briefly in the Springs Magistrate's Court on Friday.

The couple, both aged 36, appeared before Regional Court Magistrate Roy le Roux, who postponed the matter to November 7 to allow them to get legal representatives.

The couple may not be named to protect the identity of their children.

The woman, who is out on bail, left the courtroom in an emotional state and was comforted by a family member. She stood in the parking lot for some time before getting into a car.

Her husband remained in custody.

There was a small group outside the court with placards demanding that no bail be granted.
