Johannesburg - The police are looking for a woman who is alleged to have kidnapped a three-month-old baby on Monday.

The 28-year-old woman was last seen disappearing with the child at a KFC in the Joburg CBD at the corner of Bree and Wanderers streets. The suspect is known to the child’s mother.

“She was befriended by the suspect when she was pregnant,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Khensani Magoai.

The women met at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, and the suspect, known as Agnes, would call the mother of the child to find out about her pregnancy and whether she had given birth yet. She is alleged to have offered to accompany her for check-ups until she was due.

On Monday, the mother took her child for a check-up and got a phone call from Agnes, Magoai said. The two agreed to meet in Meadowlands, Soweto, and to head to Joburg to pamper the child’s mother at a salon.

Agnes then allegedly offered to buy food. She was accompanied by a cousin of the child’s mother to the KFC, while the mother stayed behind. Agnes disappeared with the child while they were waiting in the queue.

Police urged the public to come forward with information. Call Warrant Officer Selesho on 083 375 1130.
