Johannesburg - There have not been any arrests after a gang shot and killed a police officer outside Park station in Joburg.

But police spokesman Major Mack Mngomezulu insists those responsible for the murder of Constable Malesela Ledwaba will be brought to book.

“We are investigating the matter and are also using CCTV footage to identify the suspects and arrest them,” he said.

Some of the suspects’ faces are visible in the camera footage from a bakery shop robbed in the early hours of Tuesday. Ledwaba and other officers had arrived at The Bakery Shoppe inside the station when a security guard on the scene alerted the police of the robbery.

The group of about 10 people fled the scene. Most escaped in getaway vehicles, but two men were left behind and tried to flee on foot.

Ledwaba chased the pair in the streets around the taxi rank section of the station.

A witness said one of the men shot at the constable and pumped more bullets into him while he was lying injured on the ground.
