Cape Town - The shuttle operator who was jailed for the murder of Swedish honeymooner Anni Hindocha told the Western Cape High Court that he was a fool for participating in the killing.

Zola Tongo was testifying in the Western Cape High Court in the trial of Anni's husband, British businessman Shrien Dewani, who is accused of orchestrating her murder.

It is the State's case that Dewani approached Tongo to arrange someone to carry out the attack.

Tongo spoke to hotel receptionist Monde Mbolombo, who recruited Mziwamadoda Qwabe.

Qwabe brought Xolile Mngeni on board.

Questioned by State advocate Shareen Riley on Wednesday morning, Tongo was asked why he had decided to plead guilty to Anni's murder.

He responded that he had decided to because what he had done was wrong.

“Secondly, I was a fool and, thirdly, I was misled,” he said.

Earlier, Tongo testified that Dewani had told him that he wanted to have his female business partner killed.

It was only after the killing that he heard that the woman who had been shot dead was Dewani's wife, he testified.

He said that he had asked Dewani to pay him R5 000 for his role, but only received R1 000.

Tongo is currently serving 18 years in jail for his role after he entered into a plea and sentence agreement with the State.

In terms of the plea bargain, Tongo agreed to testify against Dewani.

He is currently under cross-examination.
