Welkom - A man has been found buried in a shallow grave at the President Steyn old gold mine shaft in Welkom, Free State police said on Friday.

The body was discovered by an illegal miner digging for gold at the shaft on January 5, said Constable Kethabile Mofokeng.

The miner took it to the government mortuary in Welkom.

The man, who was wearing black trousers, a blue jacket and black gumboots, was believed to also be a miner, Mofokeng said.

No one had come forward to identify him.

“Residents are requested to assist in tracing the relatives,” Mofokeng said.

A case of murder had been opened as the skull was found next to the shallow grave.

As the body was decomposed, preliminary investigations could be compromised, Mofokeng said.
