Soft drinks apparently meant for illegal miners were seized in Welkom, Free State police said on Tuesday.

The drinks, with an estimated street value of R66 500, were seized at a house in Bedelia on Monday after police received a tip-off, spokeswoman Molebogeng Lechesa said.

“Upon arrival, they searched outside rooms and found large quantities of 500ml Coca Cola, Stoney, Sprite and Fanta Orange soft drinks which were wrapped in a brown sellotape.”

Lechesa said one 500ml drink could cost R100 underground. No arrests had been made and police were investigating.
