Mthatha - A 21-year-old man has been jailed by the Willowvale Regional Court for raping his 59-year-old relative, Eastern Cape police said on Friday.

Akhona Mosha was convicted of the crime on Thursday, Captain Jackson Manatha said.

Of the 20-year sentence, eight years were suspended for five years on condition he is not convicted of another violent offence.

It was not immediately clear what relationship Mosha bore to the victim.

While she was visiting family, he severely assaulted her, raped her and dumped her in a river on January 3 last year.

“The victim managed to get out of the river and reported the crime at a nearby homestead.

“...The suspect was traced, arrested and charged for rape.”

He remained in custody until his convicted on Thursday.
