Cape Town - A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment for, among other crimes, the rape of his 73-year-old grandmother, Free State police said on Tuesday.

“On November 6 2015, the man was found guilty of housebreaking and rape,” Free State police spokesperson Stephen Thakeng said.

“He was recently sentenced in the Welkom Regional Court to four years for housebreaking and 10 years for rape.”

The man was sentenced on Friday, roughly five months after the attack and less than a week before South Africans commemorate 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.

On May 31, 2015, the man broke into his grandmother’s house in Hoopstad.

The elderly victim awoke to her grandson raping her. After he raped his grandmother, the man asked her for money and cigarettes, to which she obliged.

Thakeng said that prior to the arrest, the man instructed his grandmother to remain quiet about the attack. He threatened her saying that if she said anything he would kill her.
