Cape Town – Police in the Eastern Cape have arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of Port Elizabeth teacher Jayde Panayiotou.

Eastern Cape police said in a statement on Thursday that they had made a “major breakthrough” in the murder investigation.

Police have ruled out robbery as a motive and police sources have indicated that there may be a conspiracy behind the killing of the 28-year-old Panayiotou.

“The SA Police Service detective team assigned to the murder investigation of Ms Jayde Panatioyou has arrested two suspects,” the police statement said.

The one suspect, a 31-year-old male, was arrested during the week and will appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Thursday morning.

The second suspect, a 28-year-old male, was arrested late on Wednesday night and will appear in court on Monday.

“There is a prima facie case against the two suspects and robbery has been ruled out as the motive for the murder. The detective team consisting of local detectives, Hawks, crime intelligence and the NPA have been congratulated with the breakthrough and will continue with the investigation,” police said.

Panayiotou was allegedly abducted outside her Kabega Park home last week and her body was discovered dumped outside KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage the following day.
