Durban - The ex-wife of a man shot inside a Durban nightclub said her jealousy at seeing him with women at the bar made her send him angry BBM messages, which led to their argument before bouncers arrived.

This emerged as Cindy Botha testified at the trial of Hector Britts at the Durban Regional Court on Thursday. Britts, 33, a former mixed martial arts fighter and bouncer, is accused of murdering a patron, Craigh Botha, 33, at the Rocca Bar nightclub in Morningside on August 4, 2013.

He is alleged to have shot Botha in the stomach after an argument led to a brawl. Botha died in hospital a week later. Britts has pleaded not guilty to the murder.

On Thursday, Cindy Botha, testified on the events leading to the argument between her and her ex-husband in the VIP section of the club minutes before he was shot.

“I saw him buying some female friends drinks and this made me jealous.” She sent him text messages and he came upstairs.

She said he was not aggressive and at no point did he touch her. Bouncers arrived upstairs.

“The bouncers were asking Craigh to leave. The owner, Tyrone Lundy, arrived a few seconds later and told him to calm down and they began walking out the VIP section together. While I was standing there I heard what sounded like a loud firecracker go off.

“Then I heard a female voice saying ‘oh my God, they shot him’.”
