Cape Town - The community of Bredasdorp is living in fear and demanding answers since it emerged that little Kayde Williams’s killer is still walking the streets.

The Community Police Forum (CPF) said the police had not been able to link their main suspect with DNA evidence found on Kayde’s body.

The 5-year-old was found murdered in a bushy area in Bredasdorp early in February after she went missing en route to her grandmother’s home. She had been beaten to death with a heavy, blunt object.

It has now emerged that the main suspect, Nicholas Kobus, who hung himself a week after her body was found, may in fact not have been involved in her murder.

Shortly after his body was found the police announced that they would do DNA testing to determine if Kobus had been involved.

Michael Olivier, chairman of Oog op die Kind (Eye on the Child) and CPF deputy chairman, said they got confirmation from the police last week that Kobus’s DNA did not match DNA found on Kayde.

“We are grappling with this new information after we thought police had made a breakthrough with a suspect in her murder. We as a community need the police to give us answers because Kayde’s killer is still out there,” Olivier said.

Community leaders were due to meet Kayde’s mother, Estene Williams, on Tuesday night to find out how she feels about the matter.

At the time of Kayde’s murder, Olivier said it was particularly disturbing that the 5-year-old went missing while walking a short distance in broad daylight.

He said the distance between her mother’s and her grandmother’s homes was only 200m. The time she left for her grandmother’s, between 12pm and 1pm, was when people who attended nearby churches would be outside.

“The circumstances surrounding her disappearance just don’t feel right,” he said.

Police spokesperson Tembinkosi Kinana did not respond to several requests for comment.
