Johannesburg - There was a moment of glitz and glamour inside courtroom 1 of the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court when controversial musician Kelly Khumalo made her first appearance.

Appearing on Wednesday with her younger sister and co-accused, Zandi Khumalo, Kelly posed for pictures with her fans, as well the lawyers, inside the courtroom.

Once finished posing for the pictures, she exchanged greetings with people who sat in the public gallery with her.

The Khumalo sisters handed themselves over to police on Tuesday in connection with an alleged assault on the wife of Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.

Neither Meyiwa nor his wife, Mandisa Mkhize, were present at the court.

According to the police, although the alleged incident happened in August, the accused handed themselves over only this week.

The sisters face charges of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Kelly faces additional charges of reckless or negligent driving and malicious injury to property.

The pair made a brief appearance before magistrate Herman Visser, who postponed the matter to October 31 for further investigations.

They were granted bail of R500 each on Tuesday night and didn’t spend the night in the cells.

Once the matter was postponed on Wednesday, the pair made their way slowly to Kelly’s red VW Golf. Her defence lawyer, Phathutshedzo Thabela, wouldn’t comment when approached outside the court.

Police said the incident happened in late August when Khumalo allegedly stopped her car and assaulted Mandisa Mkhize without provocation. It’s alleged that Zandi, who was also sitting in the car, joined in.

Kelly is the former partner of convicted musician Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye, who is serving 25 years in prison for murder.

He was found guilty of drag racing in Soweto, losing control of the car and mowing down a group of schoolboys – killing four and leaving another two permanently brain damaged.

The couple have a son.
