Cape Town - A community hall was burnt down in Kraaifontein on Thursday, the City of Cape Town said.
“There were signs of a break-in detected in the bathroom ceiling, while safety and security staff also found two un-detonated petrol bombs located on the outside of the building,” said mayoral committee member, Alderman JP Smith.
He said it appeared the fire was started inside the hall.
“The fire caused severe structural damage to the roof, which will make it unusable by the rest of this disadvantaged community.
“Initial observations also revealed that the motive appears to be arson as the safe within the cash hall, as well as the speakers in the hall, remain intact.”
Smith said the impact would mostly be felt by residents who needed facilities the most, such as the elderly who required the hall for their pension payouts.
