Durban - Suspects have made off with an undisclosed amount of money after bombing a safe and cutting open an ATM inside a Florida Road supermarket.

The heist was discovered when the store was opened at 7am on Wednesday morning.

A police source told the Daily News that the suspects had broken in through the roof of Holdens Kwikspar early on Wednesday. Several tools, believed to have been used to break into the property, as well as a knife, were found on the roof.

Once inside, the burglars, deactivated the alarm by removing the battery before slicing open the in-store ATM with an angle-grinder. Once they had looted it, they turned their attention to the shop’s steel safe.

Explosive were used to blast it open.

The suspects then made their escape through a roller door at the back of the store before cutting through a wire fence to exit the premises.

Members of the Hawks, Special Investigations Unit and Berea police swarmed the cordoned-off crime scene.

Bomb squad members in protective gear made their way in and out of the shop with equipment while other police waited outside for the scene to be declared safe.

Kwikspar staff gathered across the road, as did onlookers.

Police spokesman, Colonel Jay Naicker, said the bombing occurred early today and an undisclosed amount of cash had been taken.

Spar management declined to comment

.

Representatives of a CCTV surveillance company were seen arriving at the scene.
