Johannesburg - A 32-year-old man has appeared in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court for the possession of an unlicensed firearm that was stolen in an armed robbery last month, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the firearm was recovered on Jabula Road at KwaMashu hostel on Thursday.

“On their arrival the members searched a shack and found a .38 revolver with one live round,” Zwane said.

The 32-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition said Zwane.

“It was established that the recovered firearm was one of the firearms taken during the robbery at Umbilo.”

Zwane said in June a group of security guards were in Umbilo and whilst preparing to resume their duties they were robbed by three armed men who made off with 13 firearms.

No shots were fired and no injuries were sustained during the incident.

A case of armed robbery was opened at Umbilo police station.

The investigation would reveal if the arrested suspect was part of the gang that committed the robbery.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said: “We will continue to work hard to fight crime and eliminate the illegal firearms in possession of wrong hands in KwaZulu-Natal.”
