Pietermaritzburg - A 29-year-old man was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment for raping an eight-year-old girl, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Monday.

Lindelani Mbatha was sentenced last week for the rape of the girl in 2012.

“It is said that the victim who was eight-years-old at the time, had gone to Mbatha’s room to fetch some food at KwaXimba area. He closed the door, raped the victim and gave her R5,” said police spokesman Thulani Zwane.

“The victim did not reveal the incident up until she was questioned by her mother for poor performance at school. The victim then revealed that she was actually raped twice by the accused on different occasions.”

The Pinetown Family violence, Child protection and Sexual offences (FCS) unit took over the investigation and gathered enough evidence for a conviction.

“I would like to commend the work presented in court as it has secured a good conviction for a perpetrator to be removed out of our community and give a stern warning to all perpetrators to refrain from abusing women and children,” KZN provincial police commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni said.
