Durban - Two men were arrested and an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition seized in Camperdown, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.

The men, aged 33 and 44, were arrested after Camperdown Police and Umlazi Crime Intelligence embarked on an intelligence driven operation in search of alleged hit men, Colonel Jay Naicker said in a statement.

“Police pounced on the suspects on Tuesday while they were inside a vehicle in Camperdown and found them in possession of an unlicensed firearm.”

A 9mm pistol with eight live rounds of ammunition still in it were recovered at the scene, as well as a toy gun.

“The firearm will be sent to ballistics to ascertain if it was used in the commission of any crime,” Naicker said.

Both men would be profiled to ascertain if they could be linked to various cases within Umlazi Cluster, and they were charged for illegal possession of a firearm.

The suspects were expected to appear in the Camperdown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the police on the arrests.

“Detectives will be working around the clock to link them to cases that are currently under investigation,” she said.

“Serial criminals will continue to commit further crimes unless they are removed from our streets, so we are pleased that these two are behind bars.”
