Durban – Kwa-Zulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni has condemned attacks on Congolese foreign nationals in Isipingo.

“We will not tolerate such attacks and damaging of property belonging to foreigners. This must stop. Our police officers in blue will continue to monitor the situation in the province and will investigate those cases already opened,” Ngobeni said on Tuesday.

Congolese foreign nationals living and working in Isipingo were attacked and their homes and businesses looted by locals on Monday.

“Communities need to resolve their dissatisfaction through the right channels – and peacefully – rather than to embark on illegal and violent protests,” said Ngobeni.

Ngobeni reported that cases of public violence were opened after community members barricaded roads around Isipingo and the Umlazi area.

Reports from various media this week linked the heightened tension in Isipingo to King Goodwill Zwelithini’s alleged ultimatum that “by April 1” foreign nationals should have gone back home.

Zwelithini’s Royal Household Trust has since denied the allegations.
