Johannesburg - Lenasia home owners affected by the demolition of houses illegally built on government land gathered outside the High Court in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

The group arrived early on Wednesday, awaiting the SA Human Rights Commission's lawyers to speak to them after filing affidavits at the court.

Some residents held up posters reading: “Land, we want land”.

A representative from the Lenasia Concerned Residents Association asked the residents to disperse peacefully and await an update on court proceedings from the committee later in the week.

But residents huddled in smaller groups outside court.

Some said their houses had not yet been demolished but were on the list of houses targeted for destruction.

On Tuesday, the High Court extended an order halting the demolition of houses in Lenasia. About 50 houses were destroyed when demolitions began last week.

SA Human Rights Commission representatives brought the matter to court, preventing demolitions until Wednesday. - Sapa
