Johannesburg - A 28-year-old man appeared in the Vredefort Magistrate’s Court in connection with a farm attack which left one man and two children dead, Free State police said on Tuesday.

Constable Maselela Langa said Tsietsi Joseph Mangola appeared in court on Monday for the murder of a foreman and two minors.

“On Saturday, 19 September 2015 at about 7pm at Palmietkuil farm in Vredefort, the deceased and the suspect were with six children in a kitchen at the farm and without warning the suspect went into a bedroom and took a pistol out of the safe,” said Langa.

“The suspect came back from the bedroom and pointed the foreman with a firearm and [allegedly] shot him behind his ears and [he] died. Two of the children aged 11 and 15 tried to run away but the suspect [allegedly] shot them and they both died.”

He said some of the children managed to flee and they phoned the police.

Mangola allegedly stole a firearm and the bakkie which was found in Kroonstad. The police in Kroonstad followed up information and the suspect was arrested in Maokeng at around 8.50am on Sunday.

The case was postponed to September 28 for formal bail application.
