Cape Town - Police in Cape Town have arrested a man and charged him with perjury after he allegedly made up a story about an armed robbery at his house.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain Frederick Van Wyk said the incident occurred on Sunday 7 June, at approximately 6:15am.

“A 39-year-old male residing at Endlovini in Khayelitsha contacted the police to report a house robbery,” he said.

The man, said Van Wyk, claimed that three unidentified suspects had forced their way into his house and robbed him of his cellular phone and a wallet at gunpoint.

“After realising that he had a car, the suspects further demanded that he took them to where he regularly parked his vehicle in 39 Block, Harare. As the suspects were trying to drive away they got stuck and abandoned the vehicle,” said Van Wyk.

After a thorough investigation by a Harare SAPS detective, Detective Sergeant Nceba Gojo, it was discovered that the house robbery victim had actually given police a false statement. Van Wyk said the police suspected that the suspect had used a company vehicle, and was at a different location to where he was when he claimed to have been robbed.

“He was arrested on Monday, June 8 and charged for perjury, and appeared in the Khayelitsha Magistrate Court on Tuesday, June 9,” said Van Wyk.
