Durban - Police in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested a 62-year-old man after they found him in possession of five illegal firearms, including an AK-47 assault rifle and a shotgun.

Provincial police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said on Tuesday: “Mzikawulahlwa Zulu, a 62-year-old man from Ekombe area near Nkandla, appeared in the Ekombe Magistrate’s Court facing charges of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.”

On Saturday, police from the Ekombe area followed up on a tip-off about a suspect who was allegedly in possession of illegal firearms.

Police searched Zulu’s homestead where they found the five unlicensed firearms in a “kist box”.

“These firearms included an AK47 rifle, 303 rifle, shotgun, and two 9mm pistols with 92 live rounds. The suspect was arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition,” said Zwane.

All of the recovered firearms would be sent for ballistic tests to establish whether they had been used in the commission of other crimes.

Zulu appeared in the Ekombe Magistrate’s Court this week and was remanded until April 2 to allow for further investigation.
