Johannesburg - A 54-year-old man has been convicted and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by the Mtunzini Regional Court for the rape of a 12-year-old girl, provincial police said on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the rape was committed on 26 October 2012.

“Thabani Simelane raped a 12-year-old girl who had been sent to a store by her grandmother.” Naicker said that when the victim arrived at the store, Simelane instructed her to go to the back of the store where he raped her.

“A case of rape was opened at the Mtunzini police station and was handed over to Empangeni Family Violence and Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation.”
