Empangeni - A 30-year-old Empangeni man who raped his 10-year-old stepbrother was sentenced to life imprisonment this week, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday.

The rape happened in May last year.

“It is said that the victim was asleep in his room when he heard the suspect enter his room. The suspect ordered the victim not to scream and raped him,” police spokesman Jay Naicker said.

The boy’s mother opened a case of rape after the boy alerted her two days later.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcomed the conviction and sentence, adding: “We hope that the sentence will send a strong message to all would be sexual predators. We will ensure that they are arrested so that they can spend the rest of their lives behind bars.”
