The son of a well-known rhino breeder in Mpumalanga, was charged with attempted murder after he allegedly shot a suspected rhino poacher in the family's private game reserve, Beeld reported on Thursday.
Richard Hume, 31, appeared briefly in the Malelane Magistrate's Court on Wednesday and was released on bail of R5 000.
Hume, who was arrested on Tuesday night, is the son of John Hume, a well-known rhino and buffalo breeder.
Richard Hume allegedly spotted a suspicious-looking Ford Bantam bakkie at the Mauricedale game reserve, and signalled to the driver to stop.
The bakkie raced away, and according to provincial police spokesman Colonel Leonard Hlathi, Richard Hume allegedly fired a shot, after which the bakkie came to a halt.
The driver, Sabelo Maphungla, 28, was shot and wounded.
Police arrested Maphungla, and two passengers, Siso Nkhosi, 28, and Jabo Dlamini, 38, for trespassing, illegal game hunting and possession of game. Two other passengers ran away.
Both cases were postponed to October 23. - Sapa
