Johannesburg - A 54-year-old man appeared briefly in the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court on Monday for allegedly shooting dead his girlfriend and a male friend, Gauteng police said.

The case was postponed to next Monday when he was expected to bring a formal bail application, said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

Tony Matheus allegedly shot the two in his friend's yard in Vlakfontein on Sunday.

The motive for the shooting was not known. They were shot at close range, police said at the time.
