Bloemfontein - A convicted rapist appeared in the Bethlehem Magistrate's Court on Monday for allegedly raping his neighbour at the weekend, Free State police said.

The matter was postponed to October 2 for a formal bail application, Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said.

Simelo William Kaweni, 26, was arrested on Friday for allegedly raping a 58-year-old disabled woman and removing two of her teeth with a pair of pliers. One of her legs was amputated.

Mophiring said the woman knew the man because he used to cut wood for her. On the day of the attack, the two were allegedly drinking beer together.

“On the day he unfortunately overpowered and raped her in the kitchen. He further allegedly removed her two front teeth with a pair of pliers,” Mophiring said.

“She screamed for help and neighbours found the suspect in the act. They closed the door and phoned the police who arrested (him) on the spot.”

Mophiring said the man had recently been released from prison after spending seven years for raping another neighbour in the same area.
