Ladybrand - A 29-year-old man from Ladybrand in the Free State has been sentenced to three years in prison for violating a protection order and threatening his own mother, provincial police reported on Wednesday.

Modise Moca Nazo, from Old Platberg in Ladybrand, was sentenced to three years imprisonment for domestic violence by the Ladybrand Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Police spokesman Sergeant Martin Xuma said the man’s 58-year-old mother had obtained a protection order towards the end of 2013 “after she was abused by her son”.

“On Monday, 9 March 2015 at about 18:30pm, the respondent (son) went to the victim’s house and started assaulting his mother,” Xuma said. “He wanted a key to the RDP house and when the mother refused, he threatened to burn the house of the victim that she was currently staying in and even threatened to kill her. The victim ran away to her neighbour and called the local police. The respondent was immediately arrested.”

Nazo appeared before the Ladybrand Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday and was sentenced to three years direct imprisonment.

Colonel Abram Raliopane, the Ladybrand Cluster Commander said: “Abuse victims should not be afraid and ashamed to report abuse to any police station.”

Any person can apply for a protection order at their nearest Magistrate’s Court if they are abused. The protection order is aimed at preventing the re-occurrence of the domestic violence. Domestic violence includes physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, economic abuse, intimidation and stalking to mention a few.
