Grahamstown - A man has been sentenced to six life terms for a string of crimes including rape, murder and attempting to commit a sexual act with a corpse, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday.

Morne Darries was sentenced in the High Court in Grahamstown on Friday after being convicted of four rapes, three murders, and attempting to have sex with the corpse of one of his victims, Warrant Officer Gerda Swart said.

He was also convicted of theft and defeating the ends of justice.

“...Darries' crime spree began in May 2007, when he was only 16-years-old and came to an end in 2013 at the age of 23, when he was arrested,” said Swart.

Uitenhage cluster commander Brigadier Phillip Salukazana

commended Detective Warrant Officer Morne van Tonder for his dedication in investigating the case, leading to the successful prosecution of Darries.
