Kimberley - A man was stabbed to death with a gemsbok horn while carrying his young daughter on his back.

A 31-year-old suspect, who was apparently involved in an argument with the victim shortly before the incident, has been arrested on a charge of murder.

Family members of Moses Paseka, from Donkerhoek, were still unsure of what happened on Sunday afternoon, shortly before the 27-year-old collapsed and died in Moses Mvenda Street.

However, they are furious over his attacker’s apparent total disregard for the safety of six-year-old Paseka Pieterse, who was being piggy-backed by her father at the time of the incident.

Police on Monday confirmed that they were investigating the matter, adding that they had responded to a call at approximately 6pm on Sunday afternoon and currently had a suspect in custody.

“When police arrived at the crime scene they found the body of man lying on his back,” police spokeswoman Sergeant Majang Skalkie, said.

“The deceased was stabbed with a sharp object behind his right ear and died on the scene. This allegedly followed an argument with a 31-year-old male suspect who has been arrested.”

The deceased’s partner, Shoelane Pieterse, is currently four months pregnant and was outraged over the death, especially since the suspect also put their child in harm’s way.

“Paseka was on his back when he was stabbed,” she said.

“My daughter has not slept since the incident and told us that her father was stabbed with a horn.

“Moses was still alive when I got to him at about 3pm on Sunday but I could tell he was badly hurt. You could see that he had been stabbed and that the weapon had been ripped out.

“I tried to put pressure on the wound and could still hear him breathing but there was nothing I could do to save him.

“From what we can make out, Moses and his killer had been involved in an argument.

“Paseka says that they were attacked from behind while they were on their way home.

“We are all still in shock and have no idea what is going to happen next.”

According to relatives and witnesses at the scene, the 27-year-old victim was left lying in the street for hours before he was eventually removed.

“Nobody has told us what is happening,” Pieterse added. “I have not even been able to confirm that he is actually dead.”

The couple lived with Susan Mampe, who said that she had raised the deceased as one of her own.

“I cannot believe this has happened,” she said.

“Losing Moses is a massive blow but how can someone attack a person who has a little girl on his back?”

Emergency medical company ER24 on Monday also confirmed attending to the scene but added that the victim was already dead when paramedics arrived.

“We found the man on the side of the road in Moses Mvenda Street,” said ER24 spokeswoman, Chitra Bodasing.
