Cape Town - Police in Cape Town have released a closed-circuit security image of a man they believe could be of assistance in the investigation of an attack on 18-year-old Sanet de Lange in Claremont in July.

“Rondebosch police are seeking the assistance of the public to trace the man depicted in the attached image which was obtained from a surveillance camera in the Claremont area, as we have reason to believe that he can assist us with our investigation into an assault case which was perpetrated during last month,” said the province’s spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut on Wednesday.

Members of the public who recognised the man were asked to contact Rondebosch police’s Detective Captain Nathan Arries on 082 469 2492.

Traut confirmed on Thursday that the appeal was connected to the de Lange investigation.

According to de Lange, she was attacked outside a popular Claremont nightclub, Tiger Tiger in the early hours of Friday, July 10. She said that while hailing a taxi, she had been attacked by three men. After fleeing for her life, de Lange reportedly hid under a pile of dirt and leaves and she said she was later found by Rondebosch police whom she claimed thought she was dead. de Lange alleged that she had been thrown into the back of a police van.

However, police have denied their officers thought de Lange was dead and said that they would not have moved her body if that had been the case. Additionally, they said the validity of de Lange’s claims were under investigation. Part of this investigation would include the use of closed-circuit security footage police said at the time.

Traut confirmed on Thursday that the matter remained under investigation and was yet to be finalised.
