Johannesburg - Two prisoners who escaped from police holding cells in Marble Hall, Polokwane, have been re-arrested, Limpopo police said on Sunday.

They were arrested in Hercules on Friday night following a tip-off from the public, said Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

“A joint police operation involving the local police, the community and Marble Hall (officers) led the police to a bridge, where the two had sought refuge,” he said.

The two were taken back to Marble Hall where they face charges including burglary, murder and escaping custody.

They are due to appear at the Groblersdal Magistrate's Court on Monday.

In September, a manhunt was launched after the two escaped during a shootout at the Marble Hall police station.

Fickson Motsepe and Lucky Mokone, along with a third prisoner, were being given breakfast in the holding cells when they overpowered two policemen.

They managed to grab a firearm from one of the officers and shot their way out of the station.

The third prisoner was killed during the shootout with police.
