Durban - Jozini mayor Bethuel Mthethwa has been accused of shooting at residents during a rampage on Tuesday night that landed at least one person in hospital with a bullet in his jaw.

Mthethwa denied the accusation, saying it was a smear campaign by the opposition.

It is alleged that a group of people, including the mayor, attacked residents who were holding a meeting at a school in the Zineshe area.

Mthethwa denied the allegations, saying he did not have a gun and attended the scene with police.

His political rivals, deputy mayor Thokozani Mdluli (NFP) and IFP MPL Thembeni KaMadlopha Mthethwa, insisted Mthethwa led the attack.

Police spokesman Jay Naicker said community members had gone on a service protest blocking roads. “No injuries were sustained.”
