Men to appear in court over firearms

Cape Town – Two men will appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of possession of Illegal firearms and ammunition, Western Cape police said on Saturday.

On Thursday evening, SA Police Service (SAPS) officers on patrol in Mitchells Plain stopped and searched a suspicious man in Smidt Street, Westridge, SAPS said in a statement.

He was found to be in possession of a Taurus firearm and was arrested.

On Wednesday night, police patrolling in Mitchells Plain received a tip-off from the community that a firearm was being kept in a house in Hockey Street, Beacon Valley.

The officers followed up on the information and searched the house.

A firearm was found and a 30-year-old man was arrested.

Further investigation revealed that the firearm had been reported stolen at Durbanville police station.

Both suspects would appear in court on Monday.

A third man arrested in Mitchells Plain this week for possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition, also following information provided by the community, had already appeared in court.

Police management thanked the Mitchells Plain community who joined the SAPS in combating crime, and urged them to remain vigilant.
