Johannesburg - Charges against the metro police officer who was arrested for shooting dead a taxi driver in Naledi, Soweto, have been dropped, Johannesburg metro police said on Sunday.

“The officer was cleared after an internal investigation established that he acted in self defence as the taxi driver had attacked him with a screw driver,” said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

On Tuesday last week, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department officer had pulled up alongside a taxi which he felt was blocking the road.

The officer, 32, shot the taxi driver, 38, around 8.30pm after being threatened with a screwdriver. - Sapa
