Johannesburg - A metro policeman was hit by a car and seriously injured while controlling traffic at an accident scene near Umhlanga Rocks in Durban, paramedics said on Monday.

Crisis Medical spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said the initial accident occurred on the M4 on Sunday night.

“Eye witnesses allege one of the vehicles collided into the rear of the other at high speed causing the driver of one of the cars to be ejected from his vehicle.”

Van Reenen said the sustained spinal cord injuries and was treated on scene by paramedics before being transported to a nearby hospital for further car. And the driver of the second vehicle suffered moderate injuries.

“Secondary to this collision, a light motor vehicle failed to yield for the collision, ploughing through the scene, knocking over a man [metro police officer] before smashing into a tow truck, leaving the 35-year-old man with serious injuries.”

The officer was treated on scene and taken to hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition, van Reneen said.

The driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries.

“The road way remained closed while emergency workers attended to the scene and traffic had to be redirected onto alternative routes,” van Reenen said.

The facts surrounding both accidents were under investigation by local authorities.
