Tzaneen - Police in Tzaneen have launched a manhunt for four armed men believed to be responsible for the murder of a tavern owner at Pharare village during a business robbery, Limpopo police said on Monday.

Police were also looking for a mob of suspects who had accused the wife of the tavern owner, Phenias Shai, 60, of being responsible for his death, before stoning her to death, police spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe.

Shai was shot during a robbery by four armed men at his tavern on Sunday.

“During this incident, his (deceased)’s ID book and a safe with unknown amount of money inside were robbed,” said Ngoepe.

Shai was rushed to hospital by his wife, Anna Baloyi, but he was certified dead on arrival.

When Baloyi returned home, she found an angry mob of community members waiting for her.

“They then accused her of being responsible of her husband’s killing and subsequently, she was attacked by this group of community members with various objects such as bottles, stones until she died on the scene,” Ngoepe said.

No arrest were made in both cases.

“On the killing of the husband, the suspects are still unknown and also the mob suspects are still unknown.”

Anyone with information about the suspects on both the two incidents may contact the nearest police station or the crime Stop number 0860010111 or the crime line 32211 or Brigadier Thomas Shingange at 082 565 8155 for twenty-four hours.
