A seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 13-year-old boy on her way to choir practice.
When the Daily Voice visited the victim’s family, her mother angrily confronted the teenage suspect, who was hanging out with his friends close to the scene of the attack.
He is expected to appear in Wynberg court on Friday.
Sources close to the case also say the boy has been linked to the notorious Mongrels gang in Athlone.
The alleged attack occurred on Monday afternoon a short distance from the girl’s home.
“I walked across the field when he called me and pulled me by my arm,” she explains.
She says he dragged her into a shelter behind a creche where a friend of his was waiting.
The softly-spoken girl says she struggled to fight off her rapist.
“I lay on my back and he pulled my pants off,” she says.
“I started crying and asked him to let me go but he wouldn’t.
“He hurt me. When he was done in the front with me, he turned me around.”
Her 28-year-old mother struggled to hold back her emotions as she sat listening to the ordeal.
The angry mom says she confronted the boy and his mother.
“How can a child do something like this to another child?” she asks.
“When I confronted him about it, he said he did nothing wrong.
“I also spoke to his mother who said she wants nothing to do with this.
“It angers me to think this thing happened in broad daylight to my child.
“This could happen to another child if something isn’t done about it.”
Doctors confirmed that the girl had been raped.
When the Daily Voice visited the scene of the crime, the shelter had already been destroyed.
As the girl pointed out the scene, a group of boys watched – among them the boy she claims raped her.
The suspect is facing charges of sexual assault.
