Polokwane - A man accused of killing a nine-year-old girl in Medingen village, near Tzaneen, appeared in the Bolobedu Magistrate's Court on Monday, Limpopo police said.

The matter was postponed to March 23 for a formal bail application, Lt-Col Moatshe Ngoepe said.

Mohale David Maenetsa faces multiple charges of housebreaking, murder, and kidnapping.

Ria Letsoalo was kidnapped while she and her seven-year-old brother were asleep at home on the night of March 6. Their mother was away attending a funeral.

When the mother returned home the next day, she found the door had been broken down and Ria was missing. She alerted police and a search ensued.

Maenetsa was believed to be the woman's boyfriend. He was arrested on Friday along the Modjadjiskloof and Polokwane road, allegedly trying to flee to Gauteng, Ngoepe said at the time.

Letsoalo's body was found in a shallow grave outside the village.

Charges against the 34-year-old initially included housebreaking, murder and kidnapping.

Police subsequently found he was wanted for a another murder, two assaults, theft, and two housebreakings in Bolobedu.

He had been previously convicted for the assaults and housebreakings, Ngoepe said.
