Cape Town - Western Cape police have arrested five people in connection with hijacking, house robbery, and possession of an illegal firearm.

SA Police Service officers on patrol at about 8.30pm on Thursday in Bishop Lavis, Cape Town, spotted a suspicious silver VW Polo in Montana, spokesman Lt-Col Andrè Traut said in a statement on Friday.

On checking the registration number, it was discovered that the vehicle was hijacked in Cape Town during April this year.

The female driver, aged 23, was arrested. Upon further investigation her partner, aged 34, was also arrested at their residence in Montana as he was the one who allegedly gave her the vehicle to drive.

While the officers were conducting their investigation, a white Honda vehicle with three occupants arrived at the house, and was also searched.

An unlicensed firearm with the serial number removed, two crowbars, and an axe were found inside the vehicle.

It was discovered that the vehicle had been hijacked in Parow in May this year. All three male suspects aged 24, 27, and 29 were arrested.

Further investigation on the scene revealed that these three suspects had allegedly perpetrated a house robbery nearby 20 minutes earlier.

“The circumstances surrounding the involvement of the suspects in house robberies and vehicle hijackings are being investigated,” Traut said.

All five suspects were due in court on Monday.
