Four men, who became known as SA’s most wanted after their alleged involvement in a spate of bank robberies, could be charged in terms of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.

State prosecutor Abe Koalepe told the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday that the State was waiting for instructions from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to hear if Bongani Moyo and his three co-accused, Leon Ncube, Thabani Sibanda and his cousin Khubulani Sibanda would be charged in terms of the act.

Koalepe said the investigation was 90 percent complete and asked for a two-month postponement to finalise the investigation.

Magistrate Maryke de la Rey said she could not unnecessarily postpone the case for such a long period and told Koalepe she expected to hear from him on March 28.

Appearing via the audio-visual remand (AVR) system from Pretoria Central prison, Moyo complained of toothache. He told the court he had already had one tooth extracted but still suffered pain. His toothache previously kept him from appearing in court on charges of escaping from lawful custody after his dash for freedom from the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court in August. He will be back in court on this charge on Thursday.

Moyo and his co-accused face 13 charges, including robbery with aggravating circumstances and possession of unlicensed firearms.

It is alleged they were involved in more than 35 bank robberies. They were arrested in May last year after their faces, taken from CCTV footage, appeared in newspapers across the country. Ncube is facing additional charges of attempted murder, malicious damage to property and resisting arrest. - Pretoria News
