Johannesburg -

Lawyer Dali Mpofu was in a stable condition in hospital on Friday morning after being stabbed and robbed, Eastern Cape police said.

“The investigating officer on the case will only take Mr Mpofu's statement today, because he was sedated,” said Brigadier Marinda Mills.

“He is in a stable condition and is in a normal ward at a hospital I cannot name,” she said.

On Thursday, police confirmed that two people attacked the former SABC chief executive while he was walking on a beach known as a crime hot spot in East London on Thursday.

Mpofu is representing the miners involved in last year's police shootings in Marikana, North West.

He was believed to be on a short break before the Farlam Commission of Inquiry into the Marikana shootings resumed next week. - Sapa
