Cape Town - Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa on Friday welcomed the two life imprisonment sentences handed to rapist and murderer Johannes Kana.

“We welcome the two life sentences handed to Kana and believe this conviction will serve as a deterrent to any would-be rapists and murderers,” Mthethwa said in a statement.

He thanked the investigators and prosecutors in the case.

“We want in particular to single out the good investigative work done by the police family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit.”

Kana was sentenced in the Swellendam Circuit Court on Friday for the rape and murder of Anene Booysen.

The State had requested two life terms for the rape and murder of the teenager.

Booysen was raped and disembowelled and died in Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town, on the afternoon of Saturday, February 2.
