Limpopo - A manhunt is underway for two men accused of murder after they escaped during a shootout at the Marble Hall police station, Limpopo police said on Saturday.

The two men - along with another who was killed during the subsequent shootout - were being given breakfast in the holding cells on Saturday morning, when they overpowered two policemen, said Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

“They managed to grab a firearm (from the police) and they shot their way out of the police station,” he said.

During the shootout between police and the men, one of the murder accused was killed, while a policeman was shot in the leg.

“The two other suspects are still on the run.”

A wide-scale search - involving various police departments as well as community members - is now on for the two escapees.

The stolen gun had already been retrieved during the search in the town north-west of Groblersdal.

Mulaudzi said that the escaped men were extremely dangerous.

“They were arrested for murder, attempted murder and business robbery...

“We are doing everything we can to find them.”
