Durban - One man accused of murdering Overport student, Kurtlee Pillay, has requested to undergo mental evaluation while another has indicated he is contemplating entering into a plea bargain with the State.

Three accused - Blaine Raman, 20, Dinesh Nana, 22 and Bilal Tayob, 26 - made a brief appearance in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday. The trio, according to the National Prosecuting Authority, are being charged with premeditated murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and kidnapping. The court ruled that Raman be sent to the district surgeon for mental observation after a submission by his attorney, Anand Nepaul.

Tayob has indicated via his defence attorney that he intends “negotiating” a plea bargain with the director of public prosecutions, meaning he could be turning state witness.

The three men are accused of luring Pillay, 20, a part-time student at the Centre for Fine Art, Animation and Design, to his death on the night of November 4, after he received a phone call from one of them asking for help.

Pillay was allegedly taken in his blue VW Golf 1, stabbed repeatedly, and later knocked down and dragged by his own car along West Riding Row in Sherwood.

The matter was adjourned to November 26 for bail applications. The men were remanded in custody.
