Durban -

A Chatsworth man who is alleged to have raped two young children while out on parole on a murder conviction, is expected to appear in the Durban Regional Court next week.

The 32-year-old, who cannot be named until he has pleaded, had worked as a teacher at a Durban school under a different name and was also a tutor to schoolchildren last year.

He appeared briefly in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday where the matter was transferred to the Durban Regional Court.

He is accused of raping the girls, aged 7 and 13, in August last year. During this time, it is alleged he was giving children extra lessons at his and their homes in Chatsworth.

Police had received complaints from two families.

The parents were apparently unaware of the man’s past.

During the court tea break, the man was allowed to hug and speak to his wife for a few minutes. While sitting in the accused dock, wearing a black T-shirt and green pants, waiting for court to resume, he also turned around several times to speak to his wife, who sat in the front row of the court gallery.

When the matter was over, he whispered a goodbye to her before walking down to the holding cells.

The former teacher was a teenager when he confessed to the murder of a well-known figure in 2002.

He served eight years of a 20-year sentence, was paroled in 2010, and, until recently, worked as a teacher at a local school under a different name.

It is believed his contract at the school was terminated just before his alleged rape offences.

His parole has been revoked.

When the recent charges were lodged and police went to his Chatsworth home last October to arrest him, they were apparently told he had been living in the Northern Cape.

He then returned a week later and handed himself over to a Department of Correctional Services parole officer.

He has since been held in custody.
