Taung - A man was arrested in North West on Thursday for his alleged role in the murder of a 41-year old man and rape of a woman, police said.

Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said the 21-year-old was arrested in Buxton Village, about 6km from Taung.

The man's alleged accomplice was killed in a confrontation with police in Taung's Extension Six early on Thursday morning. The 24-year-old allegedly tried to stab police officers who had come to arrest him.

The two men allegedly kidnapped Ephraime Thejane, 41, and his female companion after hijacking them on Sunday. Thejane was taken from the car and shot dead.

The woman was taken to the nearby Dryharts area where the two men allegedly raped her.

Thejane's body was found in a stream in Matolong village on Tuesday.

The 21-year old is expected to appear in court soon on charges of hijacking, kidnaping, murder, and rape.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate had been called to investigate the 24-year old's death, Mokgwabone said.
