Durban - A Sunday Tribune journalist was assaulted by Nkandla builder Thandeka Nene and an unknown man on Friday.

Journalist Sandile Ngidi was cut above his left eye when he was hit with a glass object and had to be taken to hospital for stitches. A charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm was laid at Durban Central police station.

Ngidi was assaulted when a Sunday Tribune team visited the home of Nene’s late mother in Nagina, Pinetown. Bavelile Mahlalemphini Mqadi, 64, an apostle with Power of God Ministries, was stabbed to death on Wednesday when six men entered her home and demanded money.

Last week we reported Nene had been arrested for corruption and fraud for allegedly exaggerating her experience as a builder to win government contracts worth R118 million. She was released on R30 000 bail.

Editor Aakash Bramdeo said: “Our team went to express our condolences to the family and report on the murder.

“While we understand this is a traumatic time for the family the use of violence is unacceptable. Our team were merely doing their job.”
