East London - Lawyer Dali Mpofu remained in a stable condition in hospital on Saturday morning after being robbed and stabbed, his wife said.

“There is no change. He is still stable,” Mpumi Mpofu said.

Eastern Cape police spokeswoman Brigadier Marinda Mills could not immediately be reached on Saturday.

On Friday, she said a statement was to be taken from the injured lawyer.

The former SABC chief executive was attacked by two people while walking on a beach in East London on Thursday.

He sustained stab wounds in the upper and lower body.

No arrests had been made yet.

Mpofu is representing miners involved in last year's police shootings in Marikana, North West.

He was believed to be on a short break before the Farlam Commission of Inquiry into the Marikana shootings resumed next week. - Sapa
